Using GCI (Ground Controlled Interception) Phantoms and Lightnings were scrambled to intercept Russian aircraft 'wandering' into UK airspace. The Tupolev Tu-95's or Bear's were often confronted by armed RAF fighters firing passive homing missiles. GCI has since been replaced with Airborne Early Warning and Control systems.
