Supermarine Aviation Works
Supermarine started in 1913 as Pemberton-Billing in Southampton, building seaplanes and flying boats. As Supermarine, it found fame when winning the Schneider Trophy three times. This success led to the development of the legendary Spitfire and many other types. In 1928 Vickers-Armstrongs took over the company to become Supermarine Aviation Works (Vickers) Ltd.

The First American Volunteer Group (AVG)
The volunteer group joined the Republic of China Air Force in 1941 to help defend China from the invasion of Japan. Under the command of Claire Lee Chennault the group operated the Curtiss P-40B Warhawk with Chinese Air Force markings. The earliest combat action was seen at the defence of Rangoon in December 1941. This design has been given a deliberate aged and 'weathered' appearance.

RAF Bomber Command was active from 1936 to 1968 with attached squadrons of the RCAF, RAAF and RNZAF. During World War Two aircrews suffered heavy losses with 44% of the force killed in action, 8500 wounded and 840 became POWs. A high price was paid which is now commemorated with a memorial at Lincoln Cathedral and Green Park in London. This design features a battle worn insignia and the motto, 'Strike Hard Strike Sure'.

Formed in 1918, English Electric was the conglomeration of five business making munitions, armaments and aeroplanes during World War I. Best known for electric motors and transformers for the rail industry the business expanded into consumer electronics, reactors, guided missiles and aircraft. Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird
The Blackbird is the creation of the Lockheed 'Skunk Works' division. A high altitude, Mach 3+ strategic reconnaissance aircraft, the SR-71 was truly untouchable. Any threats were simply outrun and evaded, 12 were lost to accidents and none to enemy action. The aircraft entered service in 1966 and was finally retired by NASA in 1999.

Invasion Stripes
In May 1944 the new marking scheme was approved by Air Chief Marshall Sir Trafford Leigh-Mallory. Thousands of aircraft were to be involved in the invasion so the distinctive stripes reduced the risk of being attacked by friendly forces. The stripes were painted only on fighters, PR aircraft, troop carriers and light bombers. As Operation Overlord progressed the stripes appeared only on the undersurfaces to avoid air attack whilst on the ground. Stripes were used again in later conflicts such as Korea and the operation in the Suez. This design features a weather worn insignia and Overlord stencil.

Manufactured by Breguet and BAC the Jaguar first flew in 1968 and entered operational service in 1973 with the RAF and French Airforce. This aircraft took on the role of close air support, nuclear strike and later in a reconnaissance role. In French service, the Jaguar was carrier- based and replaced the Super Etendard.

As Sopwith Aircraft went bankrupt Sopwith, test pilot Harry Hawker and Tommy Sopwith formed H.G. Hawker Engineering in 1920, becoming Hawker Aircraft Limited in 1933. This Tshirt has a striking design that captures the work of RAF Quick Reaction Alert Squadrons during the dark days of the Cold War. Using GCI (Ground Controlled Interception) Phantoms and Lightnings were scrambled to intercept Russian aircraft 'wandering' into UK airspace. The Tupolev Tu-95's or Bear's were often confronted by armed RAF fighters firing passive homing missiles. GCI has since been replaced with Airborne Early Warning and Control systems. These AEW aircraft patrol our UK skies as well as in overseas conflicts. The RAF Typhoon F2 now operates out of Lossiemouth and Coningsby still in the QRA - 'Bear Hunting' role.

The Vulcan B1 was first delivered to the RAF in 1956 and the B2 in 1960. The Vulcan played an important role in the Cold War as the part of the 'V-Force' alongside the Valiant and Victor. It was armed with nuclear weapons, the Blue Steel missile and conventional bombs. The Vulcan was also used for maritime reconnaissance tasks and as a air-refuelling tanker. The Americans affectionately referred to the Vulcan as the 'Aluminium Cloud' owing to its enormous delta wing profile. The Vulcan was used in anger during the Falklands War in 1982 where it delivered conventional bombs onto the airfield at Port Stanley.

The Sopwith Aviation Company was formed in 1912 by Thomas Octave Murdoch Sopwith. Tommy was a wealthy sportsman interested in aviation, yachting and motor racing. The business started at Brooklands, moved to Canbury Park Road then settled in Kingston. After World War I Sopwith was liquidated and Tommy Sopwith formed HG Hawker Engineering with Harry Hawker, Fred Sigrist and Bill Eyre. Sopwith produced many aircraft types including the Camel, Dove, Pup and Swallow.
