Westland Lysander
Named after a Spartan leader, the Lysander first flew in 1936 and served throughout the Second World War with the Royal Air Force in co-operation with the British Army. The 'Lizzie' had a short-field capability which made the aircraft perfect for clandestine operations with the Special Operations Executive. The Lysander was initially used for artillery spotting and many were lost during the withdrawal of the British Expeditionary Force in France 1940.
